LANDSCAPE TIPS

If you are going to invest in a new landscape, it's a good idea to consider some helpful landscape tips that will help you be prepared prior to contacting a landscape contractor or installing your own landscape.  You'll enjoy the fun of being involved in the landscape design process, and you will benefit from a design based on your unique site and personal preferences.

Planning:
The landscaping planning starts with the observation of the site, taking note of various aspects that impact the surrounding area, such as wind directions and wind speed, nature of the soil (silt, loam, clay), sunny and shady areas, whether the plot is flat or sloping , and any external factors affecting the site like tall buildings.

Sketch:
The first step in designing landscape is to measure the property and indicate the location of the house and utilities (Water Meter, Gas Meter, Cable, etc.) and place your measurements on the sketch. Be sure to include all existing concrete or brick walks and patios, driveways, fences, and draw them on the sketch.

Layout:
Next, draw the plot plan to scale on the graph paper. The scale can be 1" = 10', 1" = 20', or whatever you decide. Write your scale on the plan and northerly direction. Make sure to note any existing structures, lawn areas, shrubs, ground cover, and large trees that are to remain in your landscape design
.

Needs:
List your needs. Observe and consult each family member and consider them in your plans. These needs may include a driveway and turnaround space, off-street parking, play space for children, an outdoor living area, a vegetable garden, privacy from certain areas, windbreaks, etc.

Design:

Begin by laying out your new landscape areas to scale including items from your list of needs, keeping in mind the observations you made from the planning stage. Create your own symbols on the design to reference pictures, photographs, or designs of various items you have researched.

Scheduling:

Create a schedule of activities on the plot, keeping in mind which part of the construction phase must be completed first. Why is a schedule important?

Let's say you install a cement patio in your backyard as per the design and now is the time to build a water fountain. But the pond requires a water supply or drain and the pipe must go under the patio. So this situation calls for digging out an area of your new patio to install the plumbing system.
